    Serving those who served us

Two years ago, President Obama traveled to Fort Bliss, in Texas, to mark the end of the combat mission in Iraq.

In his remarks that day, he talked about how part of ending a war responsibly is taking care of those who fought it. The President promised to increase support for veterans, to ensure that our wounded warriors receive the care they need, and to help servicemembers and their families find opportunities once they've returned home.

Yesterday, President Obama returned to Fort Bliss to reaffirm that promise and to discuss how ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will make America safer and our military stronger.

It's a powerful message, and you should check it out. Here's the President's speech.

Watch it, then share it with your friends.

    President Obama at Ft. Bliss.

The war in Iraq is over. The war in Afghanistan is winding down. A million veterans are set to rejoin civilian life in the years ahead.

As they do, they'll be able to pursue their education through the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Through the work of First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, and the Joining Forces initiative, companies across America have already hired or trained 125,000 servicemembers and military spouses.

President Obama wants to see these heroes share in the American dream they helped to defend. He's calling on Congress to create the Veterans Jobs Corps, to extend tax credits for businesses that hire veterans, and to help our veterans find work as police officers, fire fighters, and first responders.

To learn more, listen to the President's speech.

Just about two weeks ago, I had the special privilege of joining the First Lady as a member of the President’s official delegation to the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Before attending the opening ceremonies, we gathered on the lawn of the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain for a Let's Move! event to get kids exercising. Thousands of children were there, including the children of our military members stationed in the area, participating in dozens of sports. Mrs. Obama is definitely hands-on when she joins kids in exercise and games. She is a non-stop advocate for healthy activity and good, clean, competitive fun. And, she is a powerful role model for healthy living and the pursuit of fitness for Americans of all ages.

Joining her was a thrill for me and all the athletes in attendance including Brandi Chastain, Summer Sanders, David Beckham and many others. I was especially excited to participate with my new friend, Gabriel Diaz de Leon, a medal winner in the shot put in many Paralympics and a role model to many others, myself included. Like Gabriel has done in many previous Paralympics, every member of this year's USA Olympic team has sacrificed so much in terms of time, outside activities and normal life to get to London, represent the United States and vie for a medal. I won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. The London Olympics are much different. The competitions are still the same. But the most important thing I noticed and appreciated in London are the larger number of women competing from every country, especially on the USA team. As the father of two daughters, I am always aware of opportunities for women in all walks of life, including in competitive athletic pursuits. Our female gymnasts, beach volleyball players, swimmers, track stars and so many others are among the most successful, accomplished, motivated and inspirational young people in our country.

As a professional athlete for the past 18 years, I am conscious of what it takes to compete at the highest level in a physically demanding sport on a world stage and in competition against others who are often much younger. I follow many common sense habits that coincide with the principles of Let's Move: I eat sensibly; avoid alcohol and cigarettes; workout every day; get adequate if not enough sleep; and try to avoid stressful situations. My children are in school most of the day but they are encouraged to play outside every day. They are on soccer and softball teams and take gymnastics lessons. They swim and just play tag with each other. Their generation is born technologically more advanced than my generation. But playing online basketball can never substitute for the energy, smarts and benefits associated with playing tag outside with your sister, or brother.

Thank you, Mrs. Obama, for leading all Americans to more healthy and rewarding lives.

Girl Scout Earns Highest Achievement, Inspired by Let's Move!
    08/29/2012 04:55 PM EDT

    Posted by:
Joslyn Simmons, Girl Scouts of Gateway Council

Everywhere I turned, I saw the great problem of childhood obesity. Things had changed over the short time from my childhood. Today's children were not getting the physical activity or food they needed. I was going to change that with the use of my Girl Scouts Gold Award. I was inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let's Move! initiative and by my younger cousin DJ, who is obese. I have a great love of sports and knew there had to be something to tie healthy living together with sports. Then the idea was born.

After gathering a few friends, we began to put our resources together. Most of them play some type of sports that I knew the kids would love. I also enlisted the help of my HOPE teacher Mrs. Bronson. She brought the aspect of nutrition to the table. We began to make packets with a MyPlate worksheet and Physical Activity pyramid. The kids would color the plate or put the food that would go in that food group. The Physical Activity pyramid showed what they would do and what they would cut back. The community support was a big help as well. My high school and my church donated a lot of sports equipment. Everybody thought it was important to help the kids be healthier.

On the day we launched Sports 4 Life, my friends and I were ready. I had met with elementary kids in the weeks before to get them pumped up and ready for the day. I have to admit, I can be a big kid myself. After making many posters, we plastered them on the wall. We had a BMI station to check kids' BMI. We explained the different sports and added some comedy to the mix. MyPlate was also a source of fun for the kids, especially when we talked about vegetables. When we went outside, the kids learned new things about some of their favorite sports. During the relay race, kids who had never met before became friends. When one kid was too tired to go on, two more would come up and say "You can do it!" and jog with him to the finish line. Before they left, we gave them goodie bags with a chocolate chip granola bar, raisins, and sports tickets with a message from Sports 4 Life, "Thanks for coming." The day turned out better than I thought it would.

The impact of my project was great. The kids never knew that being healthy was so fun. Some of the younger kids posted their MyPlate on the fridge and wouldn’t remove it. Other kids started to help their parents cook dinner with the foods they put on their MyPlate. When I dropped the sports equipment donations off at the elementary school, it was eye-opening to see the kids' reactions. They were so happy that someone thought about them enough to give them all the sports equipment. Two little boys were so happy to have P.E. that day so they could use the new footballs and basketballs.

One little girl summed it up best to her friend: “That what Girl Scouts do. They help people.”

Sixteen year old Joslyn Nicole Simmons is from Jacksonville, FL and will be a junior at Sandalwood High School. A member of Girl Scout Troop 143 at Gateway Council, Joslyn has received the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, Joslyn’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, Sports 4 Life, addressed childhood obesity by getting children to make more nutritious meal choices and participate in recreational activities. Joslyn used the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate model for nutritional education and engaged community support to generate donations of sports equipment for local children. Joslyn plans to attend Florida State University and major in Journalism and become a Sports Journalist with ESPN.

30 Days of Free Race Days from USA BMX

To help American families become more active and meet the First Lady’s fitness goals, Let’s Move!, and Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) have teamed with USA BMX to provide easy access to the healthy sport of BMX. This collaborative initiative will provide a 30 day membership to BMX for new riders across the country who sign up on PHA’s website. Once registered, the participant will receive a 30-day free trial membership to their local BMX track.

“BMX racing is a great activity and sport for kids and kids at heart,” said BA Anderson, CEO of USA BMX. “We are excited about this opportunity to introduce new people to our sport and hope that thousands will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Bicycle Motocross (BMX) is a sport of racing where “no one sits on the bench”. Anyone visiting a USA BMX track can expect to race and get some great exercise. There are over 350 BMX tracks across the United States, each honoring this unique fitness initiative.

Supermarket Shopping 101: Read This Before You Hit the Grocery Store
    08/27/2012 12:35 PM EDT

    Posted by:
    Lisa Cericola, iVillage

Ed note: Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama was the guest editor for the iVillage website. She worked with the editors there to create a weeklong series of great articles and videos with advice for families looking to Rev Up their Back to School Routine and introduce healthy new habits for everyone in the household. The editors of iVillage asked readers to share their own strategies for making changes stick in their families.

Before you can cook for your family, you need to know how to grocery shop for foods you’ll use. From how to make a list to making healthy choices, consider this your go–to cheat sheet.

    Making a List:

Can't live without your smartphone? Download one of the many shopping apps out there, like Out of Milk or Grocery iQ, to create a list that will live with you at all times.

If you have some meat or chicken in your freezer, a fresh vegetable in the crisper and a starch in your pantry, you’ve got building blocks for a great dinner. But that can get old pretty quick (not to mention expensive!), so try this easy five-night meal plan formula:

Two Meat or Chicken/Starch/Vegetable Dinners Like:

One Pasta or Pizza Dinner Like:

    One Taco Dinner Like:

    One Bean Dinner Like:

Click here for a week's worth of dinner recipes and a printable shopping list!

Choose one recipe for each night of the week and draw up a list of those ingredients, plus staples like milk, cereal, bread and eggs. To avoid walking in circles around the supermarket, divide your ingredient list into categories such as “Produce,” “Dairy & Eggs,” “Meat,” “Canned Goods,” “Dry Goods” and “Frozen Foods.” That way, you know where to go and what you need. (And hopefully steer clear of impulse buys!)

Like Santa Claus, you should always check your grocery list twice. Before you grab your keys and head to the store, do a quick check of your pantry, refrigerator and freezer to make sure you don’t already have any of the items on your list. Not only will you avoid coming home with an extra carton of eggs, you might also notice that you’re nearly out of an everyday staple like orange juice or butter.

    When to Shop:

Some say that Wednesday nights are the best day to hit the supermarket. Produce and meat are often restocked mid-week and it’s often the day that grocery stores reduce prices on expiring items and advertise sales. But some savvy shoppers prefer weeknight evenings or early mornings or evenings on the weekend, when stores tend to be less busy. Whenever you decide to shop, just don’t do it on an empty stomach – hunger pangs will tempt you to stray from your shopping list.

    Navigating the Store:

You’ve got your list, you’ve got your cart – let’s get shopping! Focus on the perimeter of the store first – that’s typically where you’ll find the produce, meat and dairy sections, which stock fresh, whole foods that should comprise the bulk of your shopping list. Then navigate your cart toward other essentials, like canned goods (beans and tomato sauce), grains (pasta, rice, boxed couscous or quinoa mixes) and frozen foods (fruits, vegetables, seafood).

Steer clear of the cookie, snack and soda aisle until after you’ve collected everything on your list – at that point, your cart should be full, which might make you feel less tempted to buy things you don’t need. By always heading to the essential areas of the store first, you’ll train yourself to form a shopping pattern that’s healthier – and, in time, will get you in and out of the store faster.

    Making Good Choices:

If you’re sticking to a meal plan, there should be more fresh than packaged ingredients in your cart, but there’s nothing wrong with store-bought foods, as long as you choose wisely. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

    - Look for packaged foods with short ingredient lists. Pay close attention to the first ingredient listed, which is what the food is mainly comprised of – which can help you determine whether a product is a healthy choice.

    - Consider what’s in season. If you’re shopping for fruits and vegetables in the winter, you’ll save money and get better quality produce if you buy frozen, rather than fresh. Likewise, look for bargains on deliciously ripe tomatoes and berries in the summertime.

    - Your supermarket’s salad bar is a treasure trove of ready-to-go produce, especially lettuce. If you’re one of those people who end up pitching more vegetables than you consume, just buy what you need from the salad bar.

    - Look for cereals and bread made with whole grains or whole wheat, not “refined” wheat, which has been stripped of its nutrients. Also check for sugar and corn syrup – many “healthy” cereals are loaded with sugar.

    - Meat and bread freeze beautifully, so take advantage of sales and buy in bulk!

    - Looking for healthy snack options? Try plain popcorn, frozen edamame, nuts, dried fruit, low-fat yogurt, hummus and raw veggies or salsa and baked tortilla chips.

4,000 Schools Meet the First Lady's Challenge!

As the school year starts again, Let's Move! is celebrating a major accomplishment. More than 4,000 schools have achieved certification in the HealthierUS School Challenge, a voluntary initiative that awards schools for creating healthier school environments for America's schoolchildren.

In February 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama issued a challenge to certify 2,250 schools in the HealthierUS School Challenge by the end of June 2012 and then to add 1,000 schools per year for the following two years. This summer, we hit the First Lady's 2012 goal as well as the 2013 goal, a year ahead of schedule!

As kids head back to the classroom and cafeteria, it's a perfect time to get your school involved in the Challenge. Talk to your principal, cafeteria manager, teachers, coaches, and kids and apply this year.

Schools participating in the Challenge voluntarily adopt U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards and are certified for their efforts to improve food and beverage offerings, to teach kids about nutritious food choices and physical activity, to provide opportunities for physical activity, and to have supportive school wellness policies. Schools can be recognized with Gold of Distinction, Gold, Silver, or Bronze certification.
