Last Tuesday, July 9th, First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed the fifty-four Healthy Lunchtime Challenge winners to the White House for a day filled with food, new friends, and fun! The enthusiasm was infectious at the second annual Kids’ State Dinner as children and their parents marveled at extravagant balloon animals, toured the White House Kitchen garden, listened to singer Rachel Crow perform, and, of course, dined with the First Lady.
Menu items included “Fun Mini Pizzas with Cauliflower Crust,” “Lucky Lettuce Cups,” “Zucchini Cornbread,” and “Makenna’s Bodacious Banana Muffins” among others. The President even stopped by to wish the budding chefs well.

As part of a celebration held last week for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties initiative, Dr. Chris Murray of the University of Washington and Dr. Harvey Fineberg of the Institute of Medicine, briefed local elected officials from 39 communities across the country on the importance of a new study titled “Prevalence of physical activity and obesity in US counties, 2001-2011: a road map for action.”
According to the study, poor diet and nutrition were the leading causes of disease burden in the US and contributed to more health loss in 2010 than smoking, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar! Check out this easy-to-understand recap of the report. At the event, mayors and local elected officials received information on the diet and health of their individual counties. Let’s Move! Executive Director, Sam Kass, joined more than 175 preschool and elementary DC area school children last week to celebrate the start of the Let’s Read. Let’s Move. summer programming. Olympic athlete Michelle Kwan, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and Congressman John Kline were also among those on hand to support an afternoon of interactive cooking lessons, story time readings, and activities like “Shopping Cart Nutrition Race” and “Make a Salad Relay.” Let’s Read. Let’s Move. promotes healthy eating and active lifestyles, while also encouraging strong early learning programs to ensure bright futures for children. The next installments of the series will be on July 17, 24, August 1 and 6.
On Thursday, July 18 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm EDT Let's Move! Child Care will be hosting their first webinar in Spanish! Webinar attendees will learn about the problem of childhood obesity and how to participate in the First Lady's Let's Move! Child Care initiative to get kids off to a healthy start. Early education and child care providers will share how they’re getting kids moving, making nutrition fun, and involving families. This year, Let’s Move! Faith & Communities is teaming up with the National Institutes of Health’s We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition)® program! We Can! is a national education program designed to provide families, caregivers and communities the science-based tips, tools and strategies that they can use to help children eat right, move more and reduce screen time. As a result of this collaboration, faith and community leaders can join online trainings and learn how to use We Can! materials and resources to help families help children lead healthier lives.
