Korean War Veterans: Speaking from the National Mall, President Obama honored veterans and commemorated the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War on Saturday. The President praised the men and women for their sacrifices, saying,
“Veterans of the Korean War -- in the spring of your youth you learned how short and precious life can be. And because of you, millions of people can keep on living it, in freedom and in peace. Your lives are an inspiration. Your service will never be forgotten. You have the thanks of a grateful nation. And your shining deeds will live -- now and forever.”
Voting Rights: Following last month’s Supreme Court decision overturning the Voting Rights Act, President Obama met with civil rights leaders and elected officials on Monday. While at the White House, the President expressed his disappointment in the ruling and the group discussed ways to ensure every American has the right to vote.
San Francisco Giants: The San Francisco Giants visited the White House on Monday to celebrate their 2012 World Series championship. President Obama congratulated the team on their win and highlighted the steps they’re taking toward improving their neighborhoods by stressing the importance of healthy eating and supporting the LGBT community.
Chattanooga: President Obama visited an Amazon fulfillment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Tuesday to speak about his vision for a thriving middle class. The President discussed his plan for simplifying the corporate tax code, and bringing jobs back to the United States and expressed the need for action in Washington.
“If Washington spent as much time and energy these past two years figuring out how to grow our economy and grow our middle class as it’s spent manufacturing crises in pursuit of a cut-at-all-costs approach to deficits, we’d be much better off. We’d be much better off.”

UConn Huskies: On Wednesday, the 2013 NCAA Division I women’s basketball champion UConn Huskies stopped by the White House. The President celebrated their eighth NCAA championship and commitment to positively impacting the communities around them.
“Last year, players visited the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for children with serious illnesses; joined the Walk for Autism,” the President said. “Geno just held his 11th annual charity golf tournament. And while you may be rivals with Baylor on the court, you joined together off the court to raise over $30,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.”
Health Care Help for Businesses: Thursday marked the launch of a new website – Business.USA.gov/healthcare – a one-stop-shop for business leaders with questions about the Affordable Care Act. The site allows employers to received tailored information on how Obamacare affects their businesses – from measures to help slow the growth of health care costs to tax credits for small businesses. |

When we began implementing it, we asked supporters all across the state to help respond to the misinformation or misunderstandings out there -- and that played a big role in making Massachusetts' health care reform a success.
Now with Obamacare, we've seen political groups willing to spend millions in ads to spread lies and confuse the public about what's really going on -- even about the benefits folks are already seeing, like ending lifetime caps, and young adults who can stay on their parents' insurance until they're 26. In fact, opponents have spent $385 million already doing just that. It's not that they have a better idea to protect people's health -- it's that they see Obamacare as a significant policy victory for our President, and they want to do everything they can to undermine that. Same old pattern: hurt the President even if it hurts the country. Just disgusting.
That's why we've got to fight back.

Pointing to health issues like the rise of diabetes, the First Lady spoke to over 1,800 attendees at the Latino community’s biggest national conference this past Tuesday in New Orleans, LA and encouraged parents to take a more active role in ensuring their kids make healthy choices. “Food is love,” said First Lady Michelle Obama, “but, while food might be love, the truth is that we are loving ourselves and our kids to death.”
She highlighted the growing power of the Latino community, especially when it comes to the marketplace, and encouraged attendees to demand healthy, affordable food for their families.

Healthy Baby, Happy Baby: The Indian Health Service Announces Designation of Two Baby-Friendly Hospitals
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program that was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991 to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding. As part of Let’s Move! in Indian Country, the Indian Health Service (IHS) has committed to certifying all IHS hospitals as Baby-Friendly by the end of 2014, and is proud to announce that to date, five of our facilities are now certified as Baby-Friendly.

laut einer heute veröffentlichten A.T. Kearney-Studie ist die für das erste Halbjahr erwartete Zunahme an Fusionen und Übernahmen in der internationalen Chemieindustrie ausgeblieben. Einige große Transaktionen haben dennoch dafür gesorgt, dass das Deal-Volumen gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum wertmäßig um 22 % gestiegen ist. Diese Transaktionen gingen vor allem von Private-Equity-Investoren aus. So erwarb der Finanzinvestor Carlyle im Februar das Autolackgeschäft von DuPont und im April übernahm Advent International das Kunstharzgeschäft von Cytec Industries. Doch nun melden sich auch Chemie- und Pharmakonzerne - also strategische Käufer - zurück: Gestern verkündete Altana die Übernahme des Geschäfts mit Rheologieadditiven von Rockwood für 635 Mio. $ - ein Meilenstein für den Spezialchemiekonzern aus Wesel. Diese Transaktion liegt durchaus im Trend, denn viele Spezialchemie-Deals der jüngeren Vergangenheit hatten vor allem den Zukauf von Kompetenzen oder eine regionale Expansion zum Ziel. Genau dies beabsichtigt Altana mit dem Zukauf - „die Akquisition", betonte Altana-Chef Dr. Matthias L. Wolfgruber, biete „Synergien zur Umsatzsteigerung und weniger zur Kostensenkung." Auch in der Pharmabranche kommt das M&A-Karussell wieder in Schwung: Nachdem Roche am Wochenende die Übernahme des britischen Biotechunternehmens Piramed verkündet hat, wurde gestern bekannt, dass der amerikanische Generikahersteller Perrigo den irischen Pharmakonzern Elan für 8,6 Mrd. $ schluckt. This weekend, President Obama took time to honor those who fought in the Korean War -- 60 years to the day after the war concluded. "Perhaps the highest tribute we can offer our veterans of Korea is to do what should have been done the day you came home,” the President said at the Korean War Veterans Memorial, "In our hurried lives, let us pause. Let us listen. Let these veterans carry us back to the days of their youth, and let us be awed by their shining deeds."

NCAA Champions: On Tuesday, President Obama welcomed the NCAA Champion Louisville Cardinals to the White House. President Obama, an avid basketball fan, celebrated the team’s accomplishments both on and off the court – praising their cumulative 3.3 grade-point-average, the thousands of dollars they helped raise for charity, and their determination, despite physical obstacles, to win the men’s NCAA title.
Vice President and Dr. Biden in India: The Vice President and Dr. Biden traveled to India and Singapore, as part of their six-day trip – meeting with leaders and visiting schools and aid workers to discuss the important opportunity to strengthen our partnerships within the region and reaffirm our commitment to rebalancing U.S. foreign policy toward the Asia-Pacific. When they arrived in New Delhi on Monday, they visited Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter and toured the Gandhi Smriti museum.
On Tuesday, the Vice President met with Indian Prime Minist Dr. Manmohan Singh, President Pranab Mukherjee, and Vice President Hamid Ansair. The leaders discussed the relationship between the United States and India. Later, Vice President Biden spoke at a dinner hosted by Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari, where he spoke about the importance of the partnership between the two countries. During the day, Dr. Biden visited the settlement of Kachhpura, where USAID Health and Urban Poor Program has been stationed since 2011.
Speaking from the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday, the Vice President spoke about moving both the U.S. and Indian economies forward – noting that American interests were very similar to Indian interests. Dr. Biden hosted a roundtable discussion to hear more about how groups are working to improve nutrition in India and visited The Dilaasa Crisis Intervention Department for Women, a center for female survivors of domestic violence.
Women at the Indian Institute of Technology met with Vice President Biden on Thursday for a roundtable discussion. The Vice President spoke about the importance of engaging women in science, technology, and engineering and explained what the U.S. is doing to promote STEM in the United States. Dr. Biden visited an all-girls school, where she taught a grammar lesson.
National Council of La Raza: First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to more than 1,800 people at the National Council of La Raza’s Annual Conference on Tuesday, highlighting the importance of healthy eating, while keeping in mind the tradition and culture behind food. “While food might be love, the truth is that we are loving ourselves and our kids to death,” the First Lady said. “So we need to step up. We need to own this as a serious problem in our communities.”
#ABetterBargin: Kicking off a series of speeches about the economy, President Obama boarded Air Force One on Wednesday and took off for the Midwest. His first stop was Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois – the place he made his first speech on the economy after being elected as U.S. Senator back in 2005; the President also traveled to the University of Central Missouri. At both events, the President discussed the economic progress we have made in the last five years, and encouraged Americans that we’re not done yet.
“As a country, we’ve recovered faster and gone further than most other advanced nations in the world. With new American revolutions in energy and technology and manufacturing and health care, we're actually poised to reverse the forces that battered the middle class for so long, and start building an economy where everyone who works hard can get ahead.
But -- and here's the big “but” -- I’m here to tell you today that we're not there yet. We all know that. We're not there yet. We've got more work to do.”
Instagram: While President Obama was preparing to head to Illinois, the Chief Official White House Photographer, Pete Souza, launched his own Instagram account – giving followers a behind-the-scenes look at the presidency. Meeting with the President of Vietnam: President Truong Sang of Vietnam visited the White House on Thursday for a bilateral meeting with President Obama in the Oval Office. The leaders discussed the Trans-Pacific Partnership and other ways the U.S. and Vietnam can work together to create jobs in both countries.
Talking Infrastructure: Reiterating his speeches on the economy in the Midwest the day before, the President visited Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday. The President said,
“We’ve got to help more manufacturers bring more jobs back to America. We’ve got to keep creating good jobs in manufacturing. We’ve got to create good jobs in wind and solar energy. We’ve got to tap into this natural gas revolution that’s bringing energy costs down in this country, which means manufacturers now want to locate here because they’re thinking that we’ve got durable, reliable supplies of energy. We’ve got to create more jobs today doing what you’re doing right here at JAXPORT -- and that’s building this country’s future.”
Iftar Dinner: Muslim Americans were invited to the White House on Thursday night to celebrate an Iftar dinner. President Obama, who has hosted this event for five years, thanked the community for their contributions to the United States. |
